Common questions

About sealants & joints

Polyurethane or silicone sealant?

Polyurethane is paintable, bonds well to concrete and masonry and resists abrasion, which makes it the usual choice for floor joints and trafficked joints. Silicone offers better UV stability, generally accommodates more movement and is standard around glazing and in sanitary areas, but it cannot be painted. One detail worth checking: on fresh concrete and other alkaline substrates a neutral-cure silicone is required, because acid-cure types release acetic acid that attacks alkaline materials. Tell us where the joint sits and whether it will be painted or walked on.

What sealant suits a movement joint in a car park?

Car park joints combine vehicle traffic, thermal movement and often fuel or oil contact, so the sealant must be traffic-grade and chemically resistant, and the joint must be sized for the expected movement. Send us the joint width, the expected movement and the deck type.

Is a primer always required?

It depends on the substrate. Some combinations need a primer for reliable adhesion and others do not, and the data sheet for each sealant carries an adhesion table listing which substrates require one. We supply the matching primer alongside the sealant when the table calls for it.

Always refer to the full Sika technical data sheet before application.
